An RTP slot percentage is the most quoted number in online gambling and one of the most misunderstood. It describes a game’s long-run maths, averaged over millions of spins. It says nothing about what happens in your next 100 spins.
What RTP actually means
RTP (return to player) is the share of all stakes a game pays back as wins over its lifetime. The rest is the house edge. A 96% RTP slot has a 4% house edge.
The provider sets the RTP when it designs the game’s reels, symbol weights and paytable. An independent testing lab, such as GLI, iTech Labs or BMM Testlabs, then simulates millions of spins to confirm the figure before release. That is why the number is stable: it is built into the game, not adjusted on the fly.
See the glossary for related terms like hit frequency and max win.
Worked example: RM100 at 96% RTP
Here is the same RM100 in two scenarios.
Scenario 1: you wager RM100 once. You spin 100 times at RM1. Your total wagered is RM100. At 96% RTP, the average expected return is RM96, so the expected cost is RM4. In practice you might finish with RM40 or RM300. RM4 is the average across many people doing the same thing.
Scenario 2: you keep re-spinning your balance. Most players don’t stop after RM100 of spins. They keep playing with what comes back. Each RM1 spin costs 4 sen on average. Your RM100 therefore supports, on average, about RM2,500 of total wagering (RM100 ÷ 0.04) before it’s gone.
That second number surprises people. A RM100 deposit cycled through a 96% RTP slot is expected to produce RM2,500 of spins, not RM100. The RTP decides how slowly the money drains, not whether it drains.
House edge per RM1,000 wagered
Small RTP differences add up on large turnover. This table shows the expected cost of RM1,000 in total stakes, which is 500 spins at RM2.
| RTP | House edge | Expected return per RM1,000 wagered | Expected cost per RM1,000 wagered |
|---|---|---|---|
| 94% | 6% | RM940 | RM60 |
| 96% | 4% | RM960 | RM40 |
| 98% | 2% | RM980 | RM20 |
Moving from a 94% to a 96% game cuts your expected cost by a third. That matters most for bonus wagering, where you’re forced to turn over large amounts. Our wagering requirements guide runs the same maths on real bonus examples.
Short-term variance: why your session doesn’t match the RTP
RTP is measured over millions of spins. A session of 300 spins is a tiny sample. Within it, one feature win can put you far ahead, and a dry run can take you to zero.
Think of a coin toss. Over a million tosses you’ll land close to 50% heads. Over ten tosses, seven heads is common. Slots work the same way, but with far wider swings, because one rare outcome can pay 1,000x your stake.
Volatility and hit frequency
Volatility describes how a game’s return is distributed.
- Low volatility: frequent small wins, short dry spells, rare big hits.
- Medium volatility: a balance of both.
- High volatility: long dry spells, with most of the RTP concentrated in rare features and big multipliers.
Hit frequency is how often a spin returns anything at all. A 25% hit frequency means roughly one spin in four pays. Many of those “wins” return less than your stake, so a RM1 spin paying RM0.40 counts as a hit but still loses you money.
Two games at 96% RTP can feel nothing alike. A low-volatility game might return RM70 to RM110 on RM100 of spins most nights. A high-volatility game might return RM10 most nights and RM600 occasionally. Our slots guide compares the typical volatility of each studio on BK8.
How to find a game’s RTP
- Open the game on BK8, in demo or real mode.
- Tap the info icon. Look for “i”, “?” or a three-line menu, usually at the bottom of the screen.
- Go to the rules or game information page. RTP is usually listed near the end, often as “Theoretical RTP” or “Expected payback”.
- Note the exact figure. If there’s a separate line for buy-feature or jackpot RTP, note that too.
- Compare it with the provider’s published figure on the provider’s official site. If they differ, you may be playing a different RTP version.
Adjustable RTP versions
Several large providers, including Pragmatic Play and JILI, publish some titles in more than one RTP setting, for example a 96.5% version and lower versions. The operator chooses which one to deploy. Fortune Gems is a good example: BK8’s published RTP list shows it at 97%, while some other casinos run a 95.22% version.
BK8’s list covers thousands of games and also includes its own branded versions of some slots. BK8 Gates of Olympus and BK8 Starlight Princess are listed at 97.6%, against 96.5% for the standard versions. Even so, step 3 matters more than any list online: the info screen shows the version you’re actually playing.

Using RTP when you choose a game
RTP is one filter, not the whole decision. A practical order of checks for any RTP slot looks like this:
| Check | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| RTP | 96% or higher where possible | Lower expected cost per ringgit wagered |
| Volatility | Matches your session budget | Decides how long a small budget lasts |
| Max win | Stated as a multiple of stake | Shows how much of the RTP sits in rare hits |
| Jackpot share | Separate jackpot RTP line | Base-game return may be lower than the headline |
| Bonus rules | Whether the game counts towards the offer’s turnover | Each offer names its eligible games; BK8’s 288% bonus is slots only and excludes JILI, CQ9 and others |
For Malaysian players, the local-platform titles from Mega888 and 918Kiss deserve extra care. Their info screens don’t always show an RTP, and numbers quoted on fan sites vary widely. If a game won’t tell you its RTP slot figure, a game from a studio that publishes one is the safer choice. Our game providers directory shows which studios BK8 names.
Why “RTP hari ini” sites are misleading
Search “RTP slot hari ini” or “live RTP today” and you’ll find pages and Telegram channels posting a percentage for every game, updated every few hours. Some show bars at 85% or 97% to suggest which games are “hot” right now.
These numbers can’t be real. Each spin’s result comes from the provider’s server, which these sites can’t see. The certified RTP doesn’t change with the time of day. At best, the sites show random numbers; at worst, they exist to push you to a particular operator via referral links.
Common mistakes
- Treating RTP as a session forecast. It’s an average over millions of spins.
- Ignoring volatility. A 97% high-volatility game can empty a small budget faster than a 95% low-volatility one.
- Trusting third-party RTP lists. Always read the game’s own info screen.
- Assuming buy-feature improves the odds. It usually has a similar RTP to the base game; it just spends faster.
- Chasing a “due” win. Spins are independent. Past results don’t change the next one.
Troubleshooting
The game doesn’t show an RTP. Some older or local-platform titles hide it. Treat that as a reason to choose a different game, or ask BK8’s live chat for the figure.
The RTP is lower than the provider’s website says. You’re probably on a lower RTP version. Compare similar games and pick the higher one.
The figure says “range 94%–96.5%”. The game has selectable versions. The operator’s chosen setting may not be shown, so compare it with BK8’s RTP list or ask live chat.
RTP knowledge helps you choose games; it doesn’t make slots a way to earn money. Set a budget before you play, and read our responsible gaming page for limits and free support lines.
Frequently asked questions
What does RTP mean in slots?
RTP stands for return to player. It is the percentage of all money wagered on a game that the game is designed to pay back over a very large number of spins. A 96% RTP game returns RM96 for every RM100 wagered on average, and keeps RM4.
Is a higher RTP slot more likely to win today?
Only slightly, and only over a long run. Over a single session, volatility and luck swamp the difference between 95% and 97%. A higher RTP lowers your expected cost per ringgit wagered; it doesn't promise a win.
Do slot RTPs change during the day?
No. The RTP is part of the game's maths model, fixed by the provider and certified by a testing lab. Sites that post an 'RTP hari ini' or 'live RTP today' list can't see inside the provider's servers.
Can the same slot have different RTPs?
Yes. Some providers release a game in several RTP versions and the operator chooses which one to run. Always check the info screen of the exact game you open. BK8 publishes an RTP list for its games: for example, it shows Gates of Olympus at 96.5% and its own BK8 Gates of Olympus version at 97.6%.
What is a good RTP for an online slot?
Many modern video slots sit between 94% and 97%. Anything at 96% or above is common for major studios. Progressive jackpot slots often show a lower base RTP because part of each stake funds the jackpot.
What is the difference between RTP and volatility?
RTP is how much the game returns on average. Volatility is how that return is spread: many small wins (low) or rare large wins (high). Two games with the same RTP can produce very different sessions.
